• The first game, on July 6, 1933, was the brainchild of Arch Ward, a Chicago Tribune sports editor who thought the showcase of talent would be a good addition to the Chicago World’s Fair, which was going on at the same time.
• It’s always played on the second or third Tuesday in July.
• St. Louis Cardinal “Wild Bill” Hallahan was the pitcher who threw the fastball Babe Ruth drove over the fence for the All-Star Game’s first home run.
• The Cardinals struck back in the sixth inning of that first All-Star Game when infielder Frankie Frisch hit one out of the park.
• The All-Star Game used to alternate yearly between National and American league parks. However, in recent years, the game has been awarded to parks deserving in some way, including that they’ve never hosted a game.
• Fans have chosen the All-Star rosters since 1970 but it wasn’t always that way. In 1933 and 1934, both managers and fans picked them. From 1935 to 1946, managers selected the teams on their own. From 1947 to 1957, fans chose the starters and managers chose the pitchers and bench players. From 1958 through 1969, selections were made by managers, players and coaches.
• 2015 was the first year all votes were cast online. Ballots were offered in English, Spanish, traditional Chinese, Korean and Japanese. They were also available in an audio version visually-impaired fans.
