Every year, usually in February, thousands of music makers and music fans converge on Staples Center in Los Angeles for the Grammy awards.

The Grammys (the name derived by blending the words gramophone and Emmy) were established more than 50 years ago by members of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences to honor the highest achievements in the recording industry in the past year.

The awards themselves cap off a feverish few months in which more than 20,000 entries are whittled down in a series of votes to about 80 winners in dozens of music and production fields.

The voting process has always been controversial but that seems to matter little. The Grammys, unlike the Oscars, are growing in popularity. Most fans come to Los Angeles or tune in to the awards ceremony to catch the hottest recording artists perform.

• Visit the Grammy Museum: You can see how American music evolved through exhibits, many of which are interactive, and programs at the museum that opened in 2008 as part of the Grammy Award’s 50th anniversary celebration.
• Check out musical instruments: See more than 800 instruments from around the world at the UCLA Department of Ethnomusicology’s World Musical Instrument Collection.
• Go shopping: High-end designers fill the shops on Rodeo Drive. Don’t need any $2,000 shoes? Well, it’s also a great place to hunt for movie stars and famous musicians.
• Go skateboarding: Venice Beach is the place to see and be seen.
• Go to the Getty Center: Generous endowments help this museum obtain an impressive collection of art, including the work of Rubens, Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Van Gogh and Miro.
• Get a stunning view of the city: Griffith Park is the place to look out onto the City of Angels. And, while you are there, take a walk around the Griffith Observatory and go stargazing.
• Go to Disneyland: You have to say you’ve been to Mickey and Minnie’s original amusement park.
• Cruise Mulholland Drive: You might not be able to spot any celebrities but it’s fun to drive the famous winding drive lined with millionaire mansions.
• Visit wine country: When you think of Los Angeles, you might not think of wine but more and more grapes are being harvested in the coastal Malibu area, making it a wine destination.
• See a space shuttle up close: On display at the California Science Center, you aren’t allowed in but the enormity of the space vehicle is awesome. Interactive displays help you understand what it was like to fly in one.
• Take a boat ride to Catalina: It’s less than an hour from L.A. Harbor to the quaint streets of Catalina – and you’ll have a great view along the way.
• Eat like and maybe with a celebrity: There are a few restaurants known for their famous customers but perhaps the most famous are the Chateau Marmont and the Four Seasons Beverly Hills. Chateau Marmont on Sunset Boulevard, which has been there since 1927, is as bustling with stars as it ever was. The Four Seasons, on South Doheny Drive is where celebrities often hold press conferences to announce a new film.
