Charter a Private Jet to the Golden Globe Awards

It’s not uncommon for an outsider, presumably without bias, to be seen as the best judge of artistic achievement. Perhaps that’s why the Golden Globe Awards are often an annual harbinger of what’s to come at that year’s Academy and Emmy Awards.

Each year, members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association – about 90 international journalists who cover film and television for various publications throughout the world are based in Southern California – get together to vote on the best Hollywood had to offer in the previous year. Awards are given in 25 categories – 14 in motion pictures and 11 in television.

Carrying on a tradition that began in 1943 when a group of writers banded together to form the foreign press association, the Golden Globes continues to be fun and unpredictable, not taking itself as serious as the Academy Awards.

Show hosts are encouraged to be controversial. Actors and actresses who don’t have a shot at an Oscar can walk away with a shiny globe on a cylindrical pedestal.

In 1958, the Rat Pack – Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. – delighted the audience when they stormed the stage to take over the show with whiskey and cigarettes in hand.

Young female talent has been recognized routinely at the Golden Globes ever since Peggy Lipton, who was 24 at the time, was named “best leading actress in a drama” for her role as flower child Julie Barnes in The Mod Squad in 1971.

The first awards ceremony was an informal gathering at 20th Century Fox in 1944. Jennifer Jones was named the best actress for her role in The Song of Bernadette. Paul Lukas was named the best actor for his part in Watch on the Rhine.

The following year, the members of the group held a contest for a statuette design to replace the scrolls that were handed out in the first year. The shiny globe was born.

In 1952, the association handed out its first Cecil B. DeMille (the first recipient) award to recognize outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. The second recipient was Walt Disney.

It took 10 years for a woman to be honored with the Cecil B. DeMille award. Judy Garland won it in 1962. In the 1970s, the award went to notables such as Alfred Hitchcock (1972), Samuel Goldwyn (1973) and Lucille Ball (1979).

Since the turn of the century, these have been the winners (no award given in 2008 because of the Writer's Guild strike):

  • Barbra Streisand
  • Al Pacino
  • Harrison Ford
  • Gene Hackman
  • Michael Douglas
  • Robin Williams
  • Anthony Hopkins
  • Warren Beatty
  • Steven Spielberg
  • Martin Scorsese
  • Robert De Niro
  • Morgan Freeman
  • Jodie Foster
  • Woody Allen
  • George Clooney
  • Denzel Washington
  • and more!

Contributions to the entertainment industry, by the way, seemingly has nothing to do with the number of Golden Globe wins. Meryl Streep, who has won the most shiny globes – eight – and has been nominated 29 times, has never won the Cecil B. DeMille award.

Other stars with multiple Golden Globe wins include Barbra Streisand, Jack Nicholson, Angela Lansbury, Alan Alda and Shirley MacLaine.

The most awarded films include One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Doctor Zhivago, Love Story, The Godfather and A Star is Born.
