Tried to use my own images for Wikipedia but identified as copyright violation[edit]
Thanks a lot for all the timely help regarding my own artwork. Given the complexity involved, I decided to stop here and retract what I asked. Once again, thanks a lot. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bnurs (talk • contribs)
Uploaded image appearing broken[edit]
Hi there, I'm trying to upload an image (File:Ada_Health_Symptom_Checker_conceptual_overview.png) which is a piece of work I made and then published at a medical journal that uses Creative Commons licensing (https://humanfactors.jmir.org/2020/3/e19713/). It looks like it uploaded correctly but when I try to use on Wikipedia I get a broken image icon instead of a thumbnail. However if I click on the filename it displays properly, and I can download it and it looks just fine. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
JMIR Footer: This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work, first published in JMIR Human Factors, is properly cited. The complete bibliographic information, a link to the original publication on http://humanfactors.jmir.org, as well as this copyright and license information must be included. PaulWicks (talk) 14:49, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi, Clicking some of the thumbnails gives the Wikimedia servers error messge: "Error: 429, Too Many Requests at Thu, 10 Aug 2023...". It may be a temporary problem. You can probably wait to see if it gets fixed later today. However, in the meantime, please fix the description page by crediting the real authors and source and using the same license as the source. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:05, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks - I will check again tomorrow. I added the other authors (I'm one of them) and license info to the Summary. PaulWicks (talk) 15:18, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- @PaulWicks: I had missed the fact that your Wikimedia username is identical to the name of one of the authors of the article, which explains your "own work" statement. In theory, as the author, you can use different licences at different places. But it can be confusing. On the JMIRHF copy, you used a license "BY". On the Commons copy, you used a license "BY-SA". -- Asclepias (talk) 16:03, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- That was an oops on my part, now rectified. I'm still getting a broken thumbnail however (replicated on multiple browsers). Can you (or anyone else?) let me know if I've done something wrong or whether the file needs adjusting in some way? Thanks! PaulWicks (talk) 07:19, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
- I left a note at Commons:Village pump/Technical#File:Ada Health Symptom Checker conceptual overview.png pointing here. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:05, 11 August 2023 (UTC)

Transfer from Geograph[edit]
I've been trying to use https://geograph2commons.toolforge.org/ to transfer an image (cc-by-sa) from Geograph nothing happens and looking at the archives I see this tool hasn't worked for some years. Can it be taken down to stop others wasting their time and is there an alternative? Shantavira (talk) 15:12, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Shantavira: That seems like an old problem with no answer on meta. Perhaps you can try asking at Commons:Village pump/Technical. (Pinging Multichill, who might have suggestions.) -- Asclepias (talk) 15:25, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Asclepias and Shantavira: https://geograph2commons.toolforge.org/ is maintained by User:Magnus Manske, not by me. Try contacting him. Multichill (talk) 08:17, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Shantavira: A good alternative is to follow the "reuse" or "Licensing" link from the photo page on Geograph, scroll to the bottom, and click "directly upload this image to Wikimedia Commons". This will automatically fill in Special:Upload with the same details that geograph2commons would have used, but also allow you to choose the filename, add categories, and make any required changes to the description. If there are any remaining places (on Commons or elsewhere) that recommend geograph2commons, those should be removed. The Toolforge Abandoned Tool policy seems like it should allow anyone to take over the tool and replace it with an explanation of the new mechanism. Maybe I should try that. --bjh21 (talk) 16:34, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Shantavira: Note that I've assumed that by "Geograph" you mean "Geograph Britain and Ireland". I don't know if any other Geograph sites have incorporated my changes to the "reuse" page. --bjh21 (talk) 16:39, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Problem with Wizard upload[edit]
I can't upload with wizard upload anymore since a few days. It was working fine until the 5th of August. Since the 5 August, it first shows me that the upload would take 1-2 hours and then after a few seconds that it is not possible. I tried it several days, also today. Anyone has a clue? I've checked the other upload options as well, but I do not really understand them. I'd be glad if I could just use the upload wizard. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 17:30, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- Now it says that it can't connect to the server ... make sure you have a working internet connection... in my opinion that is the wrong message as I am editing with the same internet connection as I try to upload. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 01:21, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- Today I tried to upload from the mobile, which surprisingly worked. Following the barrier also didn't exist anymore from the computer for a while. Now the barrier exists again from the computer. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 23:13, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- It seems like the problem is solved now. Today I was able to upload at different times in the same day from my computer. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 22:13, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

Can someone help me categorize the WWII photos I uploaded?[edit]
Hey guys - so, I uploaded a bunch of old pictures (I believe WWII) era, but I’ve never uploaded anything before and I have no idea how any of this works. Can someone help me categorize them? I have no idea what categories to use, how many, if I should make new categories, or basically anything about it. I believe this should link to my user contributions page: Special:Contributions/Pinkietastic. Pinkietastic (talk) 18:20, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- Welcome to Wikimedia Commons. We define "own work" as works that you created yourself, these are likely 1940s photographs. Can you give us some details on the photographs themselves like who was the original photographer or how you came into possession of the photographs? Abzeronow (talk) 18:35, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- I inherited these photos from a family friend who passed away and has no surviving relatives. He didn’t have any children, and he wanted me to have them. He had previously inherited them from his uncle. Pinkietastic (talk) 20:26, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
- although it should be noted that these are technically pictures I took on my phone of the pictures in the photo album that I was given - I technically got it a few weeks before he died but I inherited all of his stuff after that.
- Pinkietastic (talk) 20:28, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
- I apologize for any confusion - I didn’t really know what to say other than “own work” since I didn’t know if it would let me put them in the public domain if I said they weren’t - because I do own them, and it seems like a crying shame to rob the world of the knowledge that they would give since all of the other people who could have inherited the copyright are dead. Pinkietastic (talk) 20:31, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
- In copyright terms, an accurate, non-creative reproduction of a 2-dimensional work doesn't create a new copyright (It's slightly more complicated in the UK, but not in a way that makes any difference in this case). So an accurate photo or scan of a photo doesn't change whose work it is, etc.
- Photos should almost always be attributed to the actual photographer.
- If you have inherited the relevant intellectual property rights, then you can license these with {{Cc-zero-heirs}}. You might also want to use COM:VRT to have a correspondence on record clarifying how you come to own these copyrights.
- VFC is quite a good tool to make mass changes. Once you set it up through your preferences, you can launch it on Special:ListFiles/Pinkietastic to act on all the photos you've uploaded.
- Once all that's sorted out, hit me up about getting going on categorization.
- I hope that helps. - Jmabel ! talk 22:46, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks man! I’ll definitely look into that and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can! Pinkietastic (talk) 01:35, 22 August 2023 (UTC)

Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh photograph[edit]
I just recently uploaded a photo here, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:SophieofEdinburgh2023RoyalAscot.jpg and used the pending copyright status as I had uploaded it after sending an email to Chris Jackson, the copyright holder. I understand that it is going under criteria for deletion, yet I put a notice not to use it in the description. In any other case, I would simply request the file for deletion in the awake of a sudden email saying that Jackson wouldn't like it to have a CC license, but I am following the instruction(s):
Once you have received a written/e-mail confirmation granting permission you should:
1. If the material is not already on Commons or Wikipedia: Upload relevant images, sound recordings or videos to Commons. If you don't have a Commons account, see Commons:First steps for more help. If for text, upload to Wikipedia. (see here)
It is saying if the material is not already uploaded, to upload such image. Yet one may say, "once you receive confirmation", but it says "if it is not already uploaded". I find this an ambiguous term, considering the notions that it can be uploaded prior to the confirmation, or after.
Anyways, I am not too worried about this because I am going on vacation tomorrow and there is a chance that Jackson may not grant the appropriate copyright. Nevertheless, I would like an administrator to remove such templates of deletion in preparation for if Jackson grants permission and copyright status.
That is all,
BillClinternet (talk) 22:17, 13 August 2023 (UTC)
- BillClinternet: Because this is a Getty Images photo, I highly doubt you will be given an image release permission we accept. You don't need to worry about it being deleted before their permission arrives, because deleted images are restored once a suitable permission and copyright licence are received and they will be added at that time. Ww2censor (talk) 00:04, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- How would I go about restoring it? Simply re-uploading the photo to commons or having an administrator re-store it?
- Thanks,
- BillClinternet (talk) 03:01, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- Once the permission of the photographer arrives at VRT it will be restored. You must not upload a deleted image again. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 03:53, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

How do I specify the license when I upload an improved versions of a Wikimedia commons image?[edit]

I cannot upload my images[edit]
I am trying to upload photos of the murals in our post office onto a page describing Post Office Murals created during the New Deal. Our Safford Post Office is one of the only ones listed that does not have photos included, so I would like to add six photos. I always get a message in a box saying that I am not allowed to upload them. Sunny1az (talk) 01:24, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Sunny1az: could you please be more specific than "I always get a message in a box saying that I am not allowed to upload them." What upload tool are you using? Special:UploadWizard? Something else? What exactly is it saying to you (surely not "you are not allowed to upload this")? - Jmabel ! talk 04:56, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
Copyrighted image requesting it to be taken down.[edit]
Hello.
While helping out at the Wikipedia Teahouse, I've come across a user that claims to have taken a professional portrait of a person and uploaded it here as Own work. The user also said in the Teahouse that they have no personal affiliations with her here. On Google, I've found the exact same image of her here. 🛧Layah50♪🛪 ( 話す? 一緒に飛ぼう!) 14:15, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

Can I publish a scan of a rare book written by my great-grandfather over one hundred years ago?[edit]
I have in my possession a book in Hebrew, written by my great-grandfather in 1907. It is called the Jubilee book of Rishon LeZion. it is frail, and before I scan it I would like to know if I can publish the book on Wikimedia, and what format is preferred (PDF, jpeg...) Accelerator-physicist (talk) 14:46, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Accelerator-physicist: Hi, For a book, the preferred format is usually PDF. When did your great-grandfather died? Where was the book first published? We need to know this to decide on the license. Yann (talk) 14:52, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- Also (may be relevant depending on the answers to the other questions): are you the heir to you great-grandfather's intellectual property? - Jmabel ! talk 15:07, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- In addition we also need ot know your great-grandfather's citizenship and place of residence in 1907. These might also be of interest. In answer to your question "Can I publish the book on WIkimedia?", I don't think that you can publish the whole book on WIkimedia - you can publish a transcript in Wikibooks (assuming that there are no copyright restrictions). Finally, if the book is frail, I suggest that you go to a university library and ask them for advice - they will probably suggest that you get it professionally microfilmed and you can then publish it in any form you like. Martinvl (talk) 15:21, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- It is exceedingly unlikely that the citizenship or place of residence will matter. The book is public domain in the US, and pretty much everywhere if the author died by 1952, besides Columbia, Guatemala, and Mexico and a couple other small places; even then, if he died by 1922 it will be fine.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:44, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi folks, thanks for your help.
- My Great-grandfather died in 1924, in the town of Rishon LeZion, which was then in the Palestine region of the Ottoman Empire, so he was either a citizen of that empire and/or of his native country, Poland. I guess I am heir to his intellectual property, along with (guess) about a hundred equally distant heirs, although many of these probably passed.
- I will look at Wikibooks. It is not so frail that I cannot scan it to PDF, it is just that the binding will not survive the exercise, but then a digital medium is worth it. Special thanks to Prosfilaes, this answers my question - so the book is in the public domain, for me the US counts.
- Much appreciated! Accelerator-physicist (talk) 23:52, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Wikisource, not Wikibooks, is the place for reproducing old books; Wikibooks is for new original works. What counts for Commons is the US and its source country, but fortunately Israel is life+50, and I can't think of any country where it would still be under copyright so it is fine to upload as a public domain work.--Prosfilaes (talk) 16:28, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- In addition we also need ot know your great-grandfather's citizenship and place of residence in 1907. These might also be of interest. Martinvl (talk) 15:21, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- You can upload it to the Internet Archive (archive.org) and I recommend that you do, as that's one of the great Internet libraries and should preserve the copy, and probably do a better job about making it available to those looking for it than Wikimedia will. You can upload a PDF to Commons, and transcribe it on the Hebrew Wikisource.--Prosfilaes (talk) 19:44, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Again, superb advice - many thanks! Accelerator-physicist (talk) 23:55, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
License to use copyrighted image in Wikimedia Commons[edit]
I have written permission from a copyright holder to use "Fauntleroy memorial plaque.jpg", which appears at https://www.cornelius-tiebout-engravings.org/part_12.html. What steps are needed to satisfy Wikimedia Commons requirements so that the image will stay there? Do I need to have the copyright holder (the archives at University of Southern Indiana) submit a digital form? Clark Kimberling (talk) 16:34, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- First, there are two potential copyrights here: the copyright of the plaque and the copyright of the photo. Are you saying that both of these things are copyrighted, and that both copyrights are held by University of Southern Indiana? And, if so, how do they come to own these copyrights? (Sorry, but before we say how permissions should be communicated, first we need to understand what rights are to be licensed by whom.) - Jmabel ! talk 20:26, 14 August 2023 (UTC)
- The plaque was erected [publihsed] in 1937, so according to the table in Commons:Copyright rules by territory/United States, and unless there is a hidden copyright notice (maybe on the side of the plaque), the plaque itself is out of copyright. If this is the case, you need only worry about the copyright of photograph itself. Martinvl (talk) 20:38, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
My uploaded photos[edit]

Original editable files[edit]
Greetings. Is there any guidance about how best to make available the original media files, more easily editable than the final images? For example, I have made an animation in powerpoint and am exporting an animated GIF (here's the related discussion: File talk:AngularFrequency.gif). I've tried exporting the PPTX file in SVG format, but it creates a separate file for each slide, so not so easily modifiable. Is there a recommended companion open-access repository for media formats not accepted at Wiki Commons, where I could upload the original editable file? I'm considering using figshare.com or similar sites. Thanks! Fgnievinski (talk) 22:15, 15 August 2023 (UTC)

Cropping a commons image to get one person for a wikipedia article[edit]
I would like to use the image of Dick Wagner in this photo https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Gay_Pride_parade_1991,_Madison,_Wisconsin_(04).jpg for an article about Dick and crop out the (now Senator and Congressman) Baldwin and Pocan - is the easiest way to do this to just download the image, crop it, and reupload it to the commons as a new file and point back at the original for the "source", or is there a better way to reuse existing commons images that keeps more metadata and lineage connected? Thanks! 22:57, 15 August 2023 (UTC) Erik s paulson (talk) 22:57, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
- Erik s paulson: Use the CropTool that can be activated in your commons Preferences, under Gadgets. The CropTool will then appears in the left side of your screen. It saves everyone a lot of time because it transfers all the correct and appropriate information into the cropped image, such as source, license, author, etc. It even leaves a backlink to the original and visa versa so long as the original has been positively reviewed. That way all the proper information is there and does not need to be manually reviewed by volunteers. If you are just cropping a small bit of the image like a frame you can decide to overwrite the original image but for more major crops you should upload the copped version as a separate new image and not overwrite the existing file, but you have a choice. I hope you can see how everyone can save time and frustration by using CropTool. Good luck. Ww2censor (talk) 23:53, 15 August 2023 (UTC)
Using unpublished (?) images[edit]
Hello. I will soon be writing a Wikipedia article on some sculptures in a local church. It would be nice to illustrate the article with some pictures of the sculptures. I'm thinking maybe I could take some pictures myself and upload those, but since the sculptures were restored circa 2005, the church might have more professional photos of the sculptures after their restoration. Assuming the church has the pictures, can I ask for permission the usual way, the same as asking for the release of copyright restrictions for an image found on a website? Thank you, Curiocurio (talk) 02:40, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Curiocurio: let's start out by working out whether the sculptures themselves are still copyrighted. What country is this, when do the sculptures date from, and if they are any later than 1903, do you know who sculpted them and (ideally) when that person died? - Jmabel ! talk 02:49, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- If the 1949 sculptures by Woods (1919-2014), you can probably upload at least one photo to en.wikipedia as fair use. Not to Commons. The fair use being of the work of the sculptor, but the work of the photographer must be freely licensed. The permission to obtain from the photographer can be as usual. -- Asclepias (talk) 03:10, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you to both! I didn't think of fair use. Curiocurio (talk) 12:07, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Using tracings(?) of structural artwork[edit]
A bit of a niche case. I'm trying to make a page regarding the Arkville Maze, though the maze itself is private and most photos of it are either satellite/drone photography or otherwise not free access.
In a bit of desperation, I took a satellite image of the maze and traced over it in a photo editing software in order to at least convey the relative size and design of the art instillation. Is this permissible for upload? It would definitely be tough if what is essentially an art piece was unable to have any sort of visual representation attached in the article. Thanks! A MINOTAUR (talk) 03:23, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- @A MINOTAUR: seems to me it's going to be a derivative work no matter what you do. Probably acceptable within the English-language Wikipedia as fair use if uploaded there for use in a specific article, but probably not acceptable for Commons. But it is a weird case, and someone else may see an angle I'm missing. You might want to take the question to Commons:Village pump/Copyright where there is usually more expertise on this sort of thing. - Jmabel ! talk 06:59, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for the response, I'll be sure to take it over there! A MINOTAUR (talk) 12:11, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Uploading additional information and photo to the person page[edit]
Hello, I tried to upload additional information to the person page. But so far it has not been viewed. What do I have to do to get these amendments approved? I also uploaded some photos from the person's personal archive to this page, but I got a message about copyright infringement. What kind of license do I have to provide? What format should it be in? I would be very grateful for an answer! Since I am a new user of Wikipedia and it is difficult to understand the algorithm of my actions. Yuliia Gonchar (talk) 08:19, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Yuliia Gonchar: I can't make any sense of this.
- This isn't Wikipedia, it's Wikimedia Commons, a media repository. Run by the same foundation, but basically in most respects a separate project.
- No idea what you mean by "the person page", could you link?
- "has not been viewed": how would you know whether a page has been viewed?
- get these amendments approved: what are you trying to "amend"? Rules of some sort? or are you just talking about editing some article, file description, etc.? Normally such changes take effect immediately, are you saying you edited something and your edit seems not to have worked? Again, a link would be helpful.
- I'm guessing you tried to do a cross-wiki upload of some image from Wikipedia in some language to Commons, probably using the Upload Wizard on that Wikipedia. But maybe not. Again, without specifics, this is going to be hard to sort out.
- Also, if there is some language where you can express yourself more clearly than in English, please use it. There are plenty of people here who understand pretty much any language you are likely to use (including getting some help from Google Translate). The clearer and more specific you can be, the more likely someone can help you. - Jmabel ! talk 20:36, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
I want to add video but can not as the file is in MP4 after keeping it in Whatsapp on my Desktop[edit]
What I can see there are various videos on Wikimedia Commons. For example: Category:Videos of Darya Dugina. I would love add as public domain my few seconds video of Basilica Fatima day before WYD but I can not due to fact the file is in MP4 after keeping it in Whatsapp on my Desktop. Wgat can I do techically? Is this common issue? Are there any videotutorials or extremally detalic instructions how can I hange it from mp4 to something other where will be 200% guerantee to file be upload on commons successfully? Best regards Dawid2009 (talk) 10:31, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- In most cases a media file taken from WhatsApp cannot be uploaded to Commons as every file at Commons needs to have a free license. Files from WhatsApp do not have such a license unless the copyright owner issues a free license in a way that can be proved through VRT. If you have a video that you made yourself (directed the lense of a video camera on the subject than pressed the record button) or that is public domain (because it was taken 150 years ago or made by the US government) than you can upload it in the webm format (and best with a VP9 encoding). If the video is any other format you need to transcode to webm (for example with ffmpeg). You can also use the video2commons tool, that will accept mp4 and mov videos, transcode to webm and upload to commons. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 11:26, 16 August 2023 (UTC)

How to add multiple categories to an image (step-by-step)[edit]
I'm sure I'm being obtuse, but I haven't the foggiest idea of how to add categories to my uploaded images.
If I look at some of my uploads, I get a message that says they need categories. But I'm not sure where to edit/insert the categories.
I also activated the "hotcat" gadget, but for the life of me, I can't find added functionality for adding categories (and I have javascript enabled). I don't see anything that looks like the screenshots shown in the hotcat tutorial. I even signed in via a different browser and still can't find hotcat functionality.
OOF.
Thanks for any guidance. Pdanese (talk) 11:00, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- There is a plus sign at the right of all categories at the bottom, which allows you to add a new category. Or, if you want to add multiple categories, you can use the plus/plus sign at the left. You should add categories and then save the edit. Ruslik (talk) 19:59, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- Or you can skip hot-cat and just edit the wikitext. Look at the bottom of the wikitext of pretty much any existing, categorized photo: the syntax for categories is pretty simple, you'll probably understand it in about 10 seconds. - Jmabel ! talk 20:38, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Unsure whether I can upload an image like this[edit]
Hi. I'd like to upload an image to an article about a living person (I have previously attempted to upload two photos of them via the Upload Wizard, but eventually realised that I couldn't just freely use those specific images due to copyright rules and such), and have found an image from one of their social media accounts. It seems like a normal photo, simply one of them smiling and posing in front of a wall. However, I'm not sure if it can be accepted because it isn't known who actually took the photo. I thought that I could use it as it was shared on their own public social media account, and the date of when it was uploaded is clear, but I'm not sure if there's something else I should do/be cautious about before doing anything.
This specific article is probably the one I've contributed to the most in my not-so-long time editing on Wikipedia and for a while I felt that there was something missing (i.e an image). I have grown a little frustrated at times trying to upload a decent image, only to find out that I'm doing something wrong every single time (that's my fault though, I won't deny that).
Anyway, my point is: I would just like to know whether an image like the one I described is fine to upload, or if I should avoid uploading it all together. If it isn't fine, then I probably won't attempt to do it again.
Thanks for your help. Usernameisoccupiedtoo (talk) 20:21, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
- No, it cannot be used. By default, copyright is owned by the photographer. (Some countries do allow it to be reassigned, but that typically requires a written document or electronic equivalent.) Only the copyright-holder can issue a license. This is just like no one but you can give someone permission to borrow your car. - Jmabel ! talk 20:40, 16 August 2023 (UTC)
Cannons of Sher Shah Suri (1541)[edit]
So I am wondering if its possible to upload these cannons in the Bangladesh History Museum as photos to Wikipedia commons. I'm not sure if they would fall under copyright, or something. And I am a bit confused on how to proceed, so I am asking if it is possible that uploading something like this is possible? The images are from Pashtun blogspot, which in turn is from a book. See the Blogspot link and PDF of the academia book (downloadable).

Commons users[edit]
Which is the category that should contain selportraits of Commons users? Pierpao.lo (listening) 09:47, 17 August 2023 (UTC)
- Most user self-portraits are not in a category for example this picture is from a user with only one contribution and the name cannot be found in Wikidata. Many of these photos are for self-promotion only. For example, if I want to see Pierpao's self-portrait, I go to the user page and find nothing. Searching does not make much sense, because then you get to see all the user's contributions. If you do find a self-portrait, you still don't know what the user's real name is. There is the Category:Selfies, but it is not easy to find the info there. What exactly is the purpose of your question? Wouter (talk) 19:05, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

Correcting mis-attributed & mis-licensed files[edit]
File:Victoria Park Soccer Club 1933.jpg and File:WilliamDrain.jpg were uploaded as "own work" under a CC license, which was obviously incorrect. I've located the original source and determined that the copyright has lapsed, and was able to update the summary and licensing sections accordingly. However, I couldn't change the structured data for some reason. Also, would appreciate if someone with more experience can check for anything else I might have missed. Move request for a revision[edit]
I wish to request renaming my recompressed, 135 bytes smaller but identical image File:Wikipedia_Logo_as_ASCII_Art_recompress.png to a revision of File:Wikipedia_Logo_as_ASCII_Art.png
I made the image 1-bit grayscale (inverted for better compression), then used zopflipng brute-force mode to use the filter mode it finds best for the image, compressed the raw IDAT contents further with regular zopfli (it seems to provide better zlib compression compared to zopflipng), switched the image to indexed (still 1-bit), added PLTE[(white, hidden by tRNS), black] and tRNS to make the first palette entry fully transparent like in the original. :)

- What it means is that you may choose any licence you want among the five licensing options offered on the description page of that photo. I think most people would avoid the GNU FDL license, but IMO any of the four Creative Commons licenses can be fine enough. Ideally, you should read all licenses and decide yourself which license you prefer. (It may depend in part where and how you want to use the image. Consider the differences between the versions. For example, the license CC BY-SA 1.0 is the only version that includes a warranty by which the licensor warrants that he had the right to issue the license and that the image does not infringe any copyright or other law. But most people probably don't care much about that.) -- Asclepias (talk) 14:05, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
Wrong authors of paintings[edit]
How can I change the author of a painting in a file edited like this? File:Hans Holbein - Terminus, the Device of Erasmus - 1971.166 - Cleveland Museum of Art.tiff The real author would be Hans Holbein the Younger as it is mentioned in the source and not Hans Holbein the Elder.
In that rather well known File:Venus and Amor, by Hans Holbein the Younger.jpg of allegedly Hans Holbein the Younger the actual author would be the Venus painter (or Venusmaler in German) as it is also mentioned in the source.
How can I change this? I tried, but was not able to.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 02:16, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

Copyright question[edit]
I am unclear on the copyright status of File:ML @ Blue Note by Felicity Hall.jpg. The filename says the photographer (copyright owner) is "Felicity Hall" – a tour manager per [3] [4]. The Commons file description says the author (copyright owner) is the uploader User:RoyalEMV. There is no indication that the uploader is "Felicity Hall". The uploader's only other upload was deleted because of copyright violation, see [5] [6]. I don't have much experience on copyright, I appreciate input or advice to clarify this. - Similarly: what file are we talking about?

Previously when I was browsing (the English) Wikipedia I noticed that out of all of the sound clips in en:Études (Chopin), only his "Ocean" etude opens a separate popup instead of playing the audio outright. I eventually figured out this was because someone had previously added Spanish captions to what is a completely wordless piece, containing the name of the work and "Music plays". However, the name of the work is directly in the filename (so there is no need to also state it in a caption), and even more embarrassingly, the captions weren't even Spanish to begin with. I thought that blanking the page would revert the WP audio to just playing the audio outright like every other file on that page, but it still doesn't seem to; would deleting that page help? If so, could someone please do that for me, given I obviously don't have an account? Thanks. 2603:8001:4542:28FB:B593:4B67:C7AA:C849 17:56, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- There should be captions: how would a deaf person know that it's only instrumental music otherwise? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 18:29, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- 1. The filename itself states the audio is of an etude, which is defined as an "instrumental musical composition".
- 2. Even beyond that, a quick glance through the file usage shows that almost every single invocation of it is in the context of Chopin's Etudes (which make clear they are piano compositions) or an article about piano itself. (This also means that even if a deaf user's coming across the file from Commons itself, the file usage page is littered with references to pianos.)
- 3. Even beyond that, I think a better way to tell deaf users it's piano music without inconveniencing everyone else would be to maybe explain that in the file description, such as what I did here. 2603:8001:4542:28FB:B593:4B67:C7AA:C849 19:10, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- File descriptions do not show up on media embeds and no one is "inconvenienced" by making files accessible. Accessibility features like captions and alternative text are not optional. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 19:14, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- Then for the sake of standardization, it might be worthwhile to add captions to Chopin's 26 other etudes on the page I came from, just so we don't have 26 audio files that immediately play when pressed on mobile, and then one that goes through a two-click popup to a seemingly-blank screen. (And maybe you should set it so the "Spanish captions" are actually, well, Spanish.) 2603:8001:4542:28FB:B593:4B67:C7AA:C849 19:39, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- They should all have captions and the Spanish caption is already in Spanish: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=TimedText:Frederic_Chopin_-_etude_no._12_in_c_minor,_op._25.ogg.es.srt&diff=prev&oldid=794484428 —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 19:43, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Koavf You have a cornucopia of babel boxes on your user page, but none of them contain any indication that you are working on, interested in, or dependent on accessibility techniques. Yet you argue here that it makes sense, indeed is necessary, to subtitle a very specific audio file, the text "música sin canto" for 3 minutes and 5 seconds (in an audio of 3 minutes and 15 seconds duration). I think this is trolling. If subtitles in a pure audio file should really be the most sensible way to make Wikipedia more accessible, then the subtitles of this etude would at least include a mention of the characteristics of this etude and basically something like a commentary in a directors cut: "Here the composer lets the bass violins warble to then abruptly let the saxophones play a counterpoint...". C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 11:54, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
- It is in no way "trolling" to add accessibility features to files, no matter which userboxes I have. Your comment is completely off-base nonsense. If you think that explaining that bass violins are warbling is more useful to a deaf person then you are free to edit the captions, but note that I have never seen any closed captions like that in my life. What is far more common is something like "Dramatic music" or "no sound" when sound might be expected. Have you ever seen any closed captions on any piece of media that read anything like "Here the composer lets the bass violins warble to then abruptly let the saxophones play a counterpoint..."? Are there any guidelines that suggest this is best practice? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 17:36, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

- File descriptions do not show up on media embeds and no one is "inconvenienced" by making files accessible. Accessibility features like captions and alternative text are not optional. —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 19:14, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
Extracted images using Book templates..[edit]
I've noticed some non Djvu files being categorised as books, because during the image extraction process, the file description template was copied from the source book.

- Of "class emblems", almost none. Most of those involve quite a bit of copyrightable design. The medic and sniper ones would be fine, and a couple of others (pyro, for example) might just squeak by because of PD "prior art". The radio stations are mostly very close to the line. I'd say in order from clearest "yes" to clearest "no": RISE FM, MSX FM, Head Radio (I personally would draw the line here), KJAH Radio, Double Clef FM, Game Radio FM, (I think after this is a clear "no") Flash Back 95.6, MPlay3, Lips 106, Chatterbox FM. - Jmabel ! talk 18:47, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi, my name is Stefan Florin (manager marketing team weryon.ro) and i represent Sebastian Ciobanu[edit]
Hi, my name is Stefan Florin (manager marketing team weryon.ro) and i represent Sebastian Ciobanu, who has his page with Wiki: https://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sebastian_Ciobanu and who wants to change the picture chosen by the Wikipedia editor for his profile, How we can proceeed?. Thank you in advance. Weryon Digital Marketing (talk) 06:09, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
- The biography article about Sebastian Ciobanu doesn't have any picture and it does not seem, that there is any image of Sebastian Ciobanu on Commons. if there was a picture of Sebastian Ciobanu available on Commons, sooner or later a Wikpedian may add it to the biography of Sebastian Ciobanu on the different language Wikipedias. If there is a portrait image of Sebastian Ciobanu with a free license available on the internet anyone can import it to commons. If a photographer (or someone who received the full copyright of the fotograph) has an image them can upload the image to commons. If you have one or more fotos of Sebastian Ciobanu, you can upload these image, if you check before, that you own the full copyright (i.e. the fotographer transferred the full rights to you). You need to give the name of the author (the fotographer) and the source (where it has been published before) and as it is not your own work, you will also need to send a permission to VRT (click the link and read, how to do the VRT process). Addional note: Your account name is the name of a company. At english Wikipedia you will get blocked fot that name immedially. You can request a renaming at meta and as you are a representative of a company you should both verify the account and disclose that you are a representative of a company. The rules differ between different Wikipedias. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 07:47, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Weryon Digital Marketing: I think User:C.Suthorn has made this a little more complicated than it needs to be, by trying to cover all cases (though he is very correct on his advice to change your account name and disclosing that you are a representative of the company; I'd also add, you should read en:WP:COI about conflicts of interest). But as for the photo, here are the three easiest ways to do it:
- Have a photographer take the picture (or pictures). If they already have an established web presence of their own, have them place the pictures on their own web site/Flickr page/whatever and indicate overtly that they offer a it under the {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} license (which means they reserve the right of attribution, but allow derivative works and commercial use, both of which are required by Commons). Then anyone with an account can indicate that page as a source and upload the photo.
- Have a photographer take the picture (or pictures). Have them create their own Wikimedia Commons account (if they don't already have one) and upload it themself, using the {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} license. They should use their user page to state clearly who they are. There is still some possibility they would have to go through the process outlined at COM:VRT if someone doubts that the photo is really theirs, but given that we are having this discussion now I think that would be easily sorted out; you can just refer them to me and I can probably settle it without that process.
- Have a photographer take the picture (or pictures); have anyone (including yourself) upload the picture using the {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} license, and mark the file page as explained at Template:Permission pending. Then have the photographer send permission as described at COM:VRT.
- There are a few other ways to do this, but I believe these are the most straightforward. - Jmabel ! talk 19:03, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
Reverse image search on a specific website[edit]
Let's assume that we have an image that was once hosted on a website. The admin has removed it from the page, but the file is still available on that website if we try the URL. Considering that we have the file to do reverse image search, is there any chance that we can find the URL using a tool? That's the case with some valuable freely-licensed files that we can host on Commons, but we cannot find on the original source. Thanks, HeminKurdistan (talk) 16:45, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

Uploading my brand-new author icon to Commons[edit]
About a week ago, a Redditor by the name of "LeoTheFloofyDragon" delivered this portrait of my blue-furred tanuki avatar, which I intend to use not only as the top-left icon for my creative-venture wiki, but also my WP userpage portrait. (This becomes important in the commentary for an FTA post I'm currently preparing on MH, my first since late June.) Before any of you ask, here's a transcript from RDT chat on Saturday afternoon confirming his permission:
Routhwick: "Afternoon, Leo. Care if I give you a reminder before long?"
LeoTheFloofyDragon: "Reminder?"
R: "Yep. Uploading soon (with your kind permission) under my wiki's preferred PD waivers."
L: "Ofc!
"I just ask that you credit me as the maker of that piece somewhere if you don't mind"R: "As I always do in my descriptions/commentary."
L: "Awesome, tysm :3"
If The Harvett Vault (talk · contribs) could do it (sorry if Commons gave you a hard time on your uploads recently), then so might I. Any further advice? --Slgrandson (talk) 18:22, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Slgrandson: if the artist wants attribution, I would recommend strongly against a PD waiver. That does not retain the right of attribution. Use {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}} instead.
- I'm going to assume right now that the artist has not formally transferred copyright to you; if they have, then this gets more complicated. Say so below and I'll give you the more complicated version.
- The simplest way to clarify permission would be for the artist to add a comment to that Reddit post indicating the license they are offering (again, presumably {{CC-BY-SA 4.0}}) and how they want to be attributed. uhen anyone (including you) can upload that, citing that page as the source, and using the indicated license. - Jmabel ! talk 19:19, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
Wikimedia Images: Is there a difference between structured data and categories / location tags?[edit]
Hi,
I'm going to try to use an image that I've uploaded as an example to my question.
Here is the example image: File:Juvenile Northern mockingbird.jpg
If you look at edit source for that image, you can see that there is:
- location data: {Location|41.735901|-72.6351}
- And there are category tags like: Category:Mimus polyglottos
But there is also a separate???? section for the image titled "Structured Data" where I can specify information like:
- depicts: Northern Mockingbird, beak, bird, etc.
- creator: me
- coordinates of point of view: 41°44'9.244"N, 72°38'6.360"W
Questions:
- What's the difference between Structured data and the category tags and location data? Are they the same thing? When should I favor one over the other?
- If Structured Data is NOT the same thing as "category", is there a way to use Structured Data to automatically register categorical data for the image?
- Similarly, is "Coordinates of point of view" identical to location? Is there a way to get these variables to "cross-reference" each other?
Thank you.
Pdanese (talk) 18:41, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Pdanese: these are two distinct, overlapping systems. The category-and-text system is older; Structured Data for Commons (SDC) only dates back about 5 years. Some people would like it eventually to become the dominant (or sole) system here, but that remains controversial, to say the least.
- There is no exact equivalent of categories in SDC, although there is an extensive list of supported properties, of which the most important is probably depicts (P180).
- coordinates of the point of view (P1259) is, as far as I know, an exact equivalent of {{Location}}. Most coordinates of the point of view (P1259) values have been filled in from Location templates by a bot, though there is no problem with hand-entering them. A bot will notice if there is a discrepancy between the two, and use a maintenance category to mark that.
- No, there is currently no way to use structured data to generate categories. In fact, I had proposed exactly that but lost out. At that point, the discussion would get more into organizational politics and less into a "help desk" issue. Feel free to hit me up for that discussion, but this is not the place for it. - Jmabel ! talk 19:32, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
Special:Watchlist displays no watched pages[edit]
Hi, new and primarily mobile user here. I marked a number of pages for my watchlist, but when I navigate to the list, it tells me I have no pages in my watchlist. If I click on the edit log, it clearly shows edits to pages on my watchlist. Is there another page I can use to see my watchlist?
My mobile specs: Samsung Galaxy S22, Android v13 One UI v5.1, Firefox Android app. Thanks! Pingnova (talk) 23:42, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
- Not sure what you mean. You need to click on the star button so the star turns black so article are included in the watchlist.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 08:30, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
- Yes, I've done that. When I navigate to a page I have watchlisted, the star is filled in/blue. I clicked the star on a few pages to unwatch and watch again and I still see nothing on my watchlist. The view/edit watchlist page is empty and tells me I have nothing on my watchlist. But when I look at the list of edits made to watched pages, I can see edits made to the pages that should display on my watchlist. I can only see which pages I have watchlisted by combing through those that have been recently edited. Pingnova (talk) 17:47, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
- Here is an Imgur page with screenshots showing a watched page with the star filled in, the related edits watchlist page, and the view watchlist page which displays a message telling me I am watching no pages. https://imgur.com/a/usjqpfu Pingnova (talk) 18:02, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
- That is strange indeed. You can post your question to Commons:Village pump/Technical and see if someone can answer there. I don't use the mobile interface and can't help with it. But do you have the option to "edit raw watchlist" on the mobile interface? (It doesn't seem to be on your images.) If so, maybe you can add manually a page or two directly there and see if it remains there and if it then shows in the "view and edit watchlist" option. I know that's not a solution, but as an experiment it might help to identify the problem. In the non-mobile interface, it takes the user to the page https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:EditWatchlist/raw In the mobile interface, I don't know if there is a page https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:EditWatchlist/raw ? Also, if you can add pages with the non-mobile interface, it could help determine if the problem is with the mobile interface. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:29, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
I want to delete an old photo of a person and replace it with a more current photo[edit]
I want to replace a photo of someone I know who has passed away and has a wikipedia page with a more current photo of them that is more recognizable. How do I do that? BlueFeltPen (talk) 22:28, 22 August 2023 (UTC)
- Hi BlueFeltPen. There are multiple layers to your question so answering it is a bit more complicated then it seems. First of all, Commons only hosts content that is either no longer or never was eligible for copyright protection or is protected by copyright but has been released under a license by its copyright holder deemed OK for Commons. With respect to photos, they are typically considered to be protected by copyright and generally it's the person taking the photo who is considered to be the copyright holder. So, if you can provide more information about the photo you want to use, it will probably be easier for someone to help you. Perhaps answering the following questions will help others give you a more specific answer. Did you take the photo yourself? Have you previously published the photo somewhere online or in some print publication if you did take it? Where did you find the photo if you didn't take it yourself? Is it something you found on some website or in some print publication? -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:48, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you for your reply. I've had the photo for a long time, it was given to me by the person who is since deceased. I believe he'd be happy to have his out of date photo replaced with something recognizable and clearer. Is it possible to add it as a second photo and leave the first one there also, at the least? - @BlueFeltPen: Commons is an archive. We don't delete old photos just because someone has a different photo they prefer. It may not be the photo that should be on the Wikipedia article, but that doesn't mean it will be deleted from Commons.
- "it was given to me by the person who is since deceased": was that person the photographer? If so, would it be possible to get permission from their heir(s)? You don't say what country this is about, but in most countries, copyright persists for 70 years after the death of the author (for a photo, the photographer). Yes, we absolutely need permission. Commons only hosts files that are either in the public domain or free-licensed.
- If you do know the heir, see COM:VRT for what they'd need to do. - Jmabel ! talk 19:59, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

Hello all.
I've been approached at my WP-talkpage [7] about 2 pictures at Familial dysautonomia and several other language WP:s, File:Riley day.jpg and File:Kyphoscoliosis hereditary sensory autonomic neuropathy III.jpg.
Afaict, the licensing is ok. But: is there, per the request, a case for deleting these pictures from Commons per COM:BLP? Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:19, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- Images related to medical conditions raise privacy and ethics concerns, even when they are sourced to peer-reviewed journals. Do we have a hard-line policy about showing images of medical conditions? @Doc James: may be able to comment from a more informed perspective...
- ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 13:19, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- Obviously, a photo taken during a medical examination is not taken in a public place and requires consent. In the present case, consent was given. See the section "acknowlwdgements" in the source article [8],[9]: "The authors are grateful to the families for their cooperation. Written consent for publication was obtained from the patient or their relative." The article was published in 2007. The photos in the two files are undated but from the look they might be from much earlier, likely before 2000. The latest picture of the person on those files is when she was 19. When consent was given, the pictured person was adult, unless she was dead, which unfortunately is possible, in which case the consent would have been given by a relative. I suppose that one might argue if the person who consented to publication consented to publication with a free license. That would be a valid question and it could be asked to the authors of the source article. If the request for deletion had come from the pictured person or from her surviving relatives, I think Commons should be open to the possibility of a deletion. However, from the wording of the request on the page en:User talk:Gråbergs Gråa Sång#Question from Kincsk (14:49, 22 August 2023), it sounds like the request is made by some unrelated person claiming that unidentified "families" requested the removal of the two images from the Wikipedia article. That vague wording is suggestive that it has nothing to do with the family of the pictured person. The request does not mention a deletion from Commons. The editorial decision about what to do with the Wikipedia article is for the editors of Wikipedia, not for Commons. But IMHO that some unrelated people take issue with medical illustrations is not a reason to remove those illustrations from an article. The files are in use and they are useful to the understanding of the article. -- Asclepias (talk) 15:18, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- I quite agree with Asclepias. I suggest that a request by sent to VRT with detailed about who requests the deletion. Then a deletion request can be started without mentioning personal details. Yann (talk) 15:34, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- Without a view on a possible deletion: "Consent was given". I assume that the persons depicted gave their consent to the publication in a professional journal in 2007 (Wikipedia had been around for 6 years, Facebook for 3 years, Twitter for 1 year, Mastodon did not yet exist). They may not have even been aware that this journal would also be available on the Internet, that lay people can borrow it via interlibrary loan from any library, that it will become searchable via image search engines, and that BigData ML algorithms will use it as learning data for generating images. To speak here of a valid Consent for Commons is not necessarily insightful for all people. C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 16:31, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- That is a valid concern, although it's more about changing the general policy. Where to draw a line for consistency? Should the policy refuse all consents given before a certain year, e.g. 2020? And/or refuse all consents given for a first publication in paper or in a scientific publication? Or never accept any consent at all, because people cannot know what might be possible in the future? Those are legitimate questions for a general discussion of policy. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:07, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

ATTN: User:Kincsk: you will want to write to permissions-commonswikimedia.org, where this can be further sorted out by confidential correspondence. - Jmabel ! talk 16:50, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- Probably not to do with permissions-commons. They want to remove images from a Wikipedia article [10] because they're an organization who apparently believes that they have authority to approve the contents of that article. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:16, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Asclepias: they would presumably like the image removed from Commons as well, and that removes it from Wikipedia. If the affected family writes to permissions-commonswikimedia.org, I would assume they would get a courtesy deletion on a personality rights basis. Do you think not? - Jmabel ! talk 20:03, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- Ok, if you believe that there's more than a 1% chance that this request can have anything to do with the actual family, who never manifested a problem with those photos in the 15 years they've been on Commons and Wikipedia. But if not, I'm not much for the idea that this organization, who just seems to think it's entitled to supervise Wikipedia articles, would start making requests by email to delete Commons files. A first step could be to use the talk page of the article and, in the unlikely event that it at least claims that the family is involved, then they could contact Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:41, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Asclepias: I agree that if the request just comes from the organization, they don't really have any "standing" here. - Jmabel ! talk 22:05, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

Librarypdmu (talk) 10:32, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- @Librarypdmu: that doesn't sound like something we can probably have on Commons: it sounds like the copyright status of that photo is entirely unclear. If this is for the English-language Wikipedia, you might be able to do it internally there: see en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. I'm not aware of the policies for this in the Russian-language Wikipedia (they don't seem to have a corresponding policy linked) but you can ask about their policy at ru:Википедия:Форум/Вопросы. - Jmabel ! talk 16:56, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Can I create an article and include an image from a Wikipedia article in English ?[edit]
Can I create an article and include an image from another Wikipedia article in English ? Zapatel (talk) 12:48, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- What do you mean? Do you want to write an article in the english Wikipedia and use an image that is used in another language wikipedia already? In that case you can do that, if the image is on commons. If the image is not on commons it is probably fair use and you have to check if it is fair use in the english wikipedia also. Or do you want to create an article outside of wikipedia and use an image from commons. You can do that, but you must obey the license of the image. It is described at the description page of the image and there is no need to ask (here or anywhere else). Or are you asking, if you are allowed to do something that is forbidden? In that case: No, it is forbidden. Why do you ask at all? C.Suthorn (@Life_is@no-pony.farm - p7.ee/p) (talk) 16:39, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
העלאת תמונה של מישהו שאני כותב עליו ערך[edit]
אני מנסה להעלות תמונה שנשוא הערך שלח אלי בוואטסאפ ואני לא מצליח לעשות כן. מדוע? TsviDeer (talk) 16:13, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- @TsviDeer: According to the logs, you triggered the "Cross-wiki upload filter" on three occasions when attempting to upload from he.wikipedia. You can try to upload directly from Commons. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:26, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
I uploaded an image today but have since found a better quality version already on the site. Delete mine?[edit]
I uploaded file:Ms_Ashm._332,_f.35º.jpg today but have since found that there is a better version (File:Horoscope of John Ogilby taken by Ashmole.png) already on Commons. I have already changed the en.wikipedia article (John Ogilby) to use the latter, so the former is now redundant. I suggest that you delete it. JMF (talk) 22:10, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- I am interested in this reply. We have many files of the same painting with sometimes strong differences in quality. We could delete some as some are hardly ever getting used, since there are better ones already on commons that are widely used.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 22:24, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- Convenience links: File:Ms Ashm. 332, f.35º.jpg, File:Horoscope of John Ogilby taken by Ashmole.png. - Jmabel ! talk 00:18, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
- @JMF: I'll take that as a request for a courtesy deletion and act accordingly. You can pretty much always get a courtesy deletion for a recently-uploaded unused file. See Template:My bad upload. - Jmabel ! talk 00:26, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
