Thank you Uğurkent for shorting images in categories. @Rillke, Miya, Beria, and Uğurkent: Can we start POTY2015 in 1st week of April? -- Odisha1 (talk) 17:26, 10 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
We should ask rillke if it is all ok with the script, but I dont see why not. Béria L. Rodríguez msg 18:56, 14 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I asked rillke on IRC. Though having been really busy with pressing tasks on Commons, rillke replied "okay" to "1st week of April" and beta testing period as "2016-03-21 or somewhere in that week".--miya (talk) 00:18, 15 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

How about this schedule? Please check there aren't any other important ongoings--miya (talk) 07:39, 15 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

    • I'm afraid if it is possible, because we rely on rillke the whole technical aspects of the voting(thanks very much!) and technical administration will take much time on every day of the period. Anyway I'll ask rillke if it is possible. --miya (talk) 03:25, 17 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I rememberd Rillke said 7 to 10 days would be good option. Well, better have an IRC meeting[1].--miya (talk) 15:15, 17 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

--miya (talk) 02:41, 19 March 2016 (UTC) I'll look into what's missing tomorrow, after lunch. -- Rillke(q?) 20:58, 25 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

There's an issue with the voting script, Mozilla Firefox (at least) and the server. When selecting a non-default thumbnail size, too many requests are sent and visitors see a chequered background only, instead of a thumbnail. -- Rillke(q?) 18:18, 26 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Fixed. Everyone ready to start? -- Rillke(q?) 01:33, 27 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think so. Beautiful photos and wonderful voting systems! Please start the beta testing!--miya (talk) 03:58, 27 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Categories[edit]

I posted comment about splitting/merging categories on Commons talk:Picture of the Year/2015/R1/Gallery.--miya (talk) 14:36, 15 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Now there are several small changes of the categories as below:

Translations[edit]

As there are some new category names I created Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/Translations. @Rillke: , may I create Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/Translations/Misc and Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/Translations/Lua just like POTY2014/Translations/Misc and POTY2014/Translations/Lua?--miya (talk) 04:38, 27 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Just go ahead :) If you encounter any errors, let me know and I'll fix them up. -- Rillke(q?) 17:12, 27 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Done;) Thank you, Rillke.--miya (talk) 01:41, 28 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

As the button in Commons:Picture of the Year/2015 would not turn from red to green, I altered "POTY2014/state" to "POTY2015/state". I also made the previous winners' images smaller, and marked (or thought to mark) the version to be translated. But button in the top page of several languages would not turn green. I'm afraid I did something wrong.--miya (talk) 01:41, 28 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you. The only thing that went wrong (or simply didn't go) is caused by a long-standing issue with the translate extension. No need to worry. As for the smaller thumbnails, the caption "winner" now hardly fits and in other languages, e.g. Esperanto it might break words. As the heading already says "Previous winners", perhaps remove the "winner" altogether from the thumbnail text? -- Rillke(q?) 02:23, 28 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

R1 results[edit]

@Rillke: Hi :-), You have tool to generate the list? --Steinsplitter (talk) 10:50, 12 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'll run it this night. -- Rillke(q?) 10:18, 13 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Apparently Firefox has changed how it managers memory. Either it is leaking memory, refusing to allocate more (despite it could; my machine has a lot) or it simply doesn't garbage collect or it gets something wrongly calculated. The result is always an OOM-error. I'll try a different browser this night. -- Rillke(q?) 10:25, 16 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Rillke: The CN will start at 2016-04-24 01:00 - Schould we change it? --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:07, 19 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Steinsplitter: Can we postpone it by, say, 4 or 5 days? -- Rillke(q?) 11:46, 20 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Rillke: Then other banners will be live at the same time :/ --Steinsplitter (talk) 12:25, 20 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Steinsplitter, we can set "Priority high" like last year.--miya (talk) 21:39, 20 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Rillke: Now CN is set to start on 2016-04-28.--miya (talk) 17:02, 21 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Are you still counting? I miss some candidates, also the eye SVG, on the R1 results. Please move this question to wherever it belongs. –Be..anyone 💩 00:31, 21 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi, Be..anyone. What you saw was a preliminary one, just a part of the result - which contains only 494, less than half of the candidates. Probably because there are so many candidates (1322 in full) compared to those last years (less than 1000), uploading the whole result in a page seems a little too heavy. I added "under construction" tag to the Result page. Thank you for your comment.--miya (talk) 01:25, 21 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, I also missed an attempt by be..anyone to replace their vote by the same vote in the abuse log. :-)Be..anyone 💩 21:26, 21 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
In the interest of getting the ball rolling again, I've taken the liberty of doing some tallying based on Rillke's json: User:Storkk/prelim. It does need checking before it is used, and the committee needs to decide whether there should be a grace period or whether the time limits are strict (it's all in the notes). Storkk (talk) 16:21, 11 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Storkk: As far i know, we can start and schould start as soon as possible. The CN banner notice etc. has ben delayed multiple time yet. I contacted @Rillke: multiple time, but no idea why he is not generating the list (as far i know he has a script for that) So i think we schould go ahead. --Steinsplitter (talk) 16:27, 11 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Steinsplitter: I would be extremely embarrased if an error on my part led to incorrect R2 candidates, so I think it does need checking. Full results table is now at User:Storkk/prelim/full to help checking. Storkk (talk) 16:44, 11 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've run some tests (User talk:Storkk/prelim/full) and haven't found any errors. I'd still be much happier if someone else would check a few (it's often difficult to see your own mistakes, and it might be better to start with different assumptions), but it seems pointless to wait further if nobody is inclined to help check... As long as Rillke still stands behind the accuracy of the JSON (other than renamed users at Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2015/R1/Results/user_checking). I still have a nagging feeling that I'm missing something, but I can't see it... Storkk (talk) 21:05, 12 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Storkk, I'm deeply grateful to you for these tremendous works. It must be very complicated. I checked top 30s and category tops as far as I could, and found no doubt about which candidates should be the finalists. Committee members, @Odisha1, Uğurkent, Rillke, Beria, and Steinsplitter: , will you agree with the Finalists hrer:Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/Candidates/R2? --miya (talk) 07:54, 14 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I can't confirm that the list is 100% OK because i don't know how to evaluate, but it looks fine. Thanks for your work! --Steinsplitter (talk) 13:53, 14 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You're welcome, both! Storkk (talk) 16:14, 14 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I added Storkk's work to Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/R1/Results, applied them to Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/R1/Results/Finalists and Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/R1/Results/Candidates, and created Result page. Will you please check them? Thanks.--miya (talk) 00:15, 15 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

R2 is now open (a few days testing, everything seems fine right now). Automated count here. --Steinsplitter (talk) 16:38, 15 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Storkk: Hi :), Are you able to help with R2 counting as well? --Steinsplitter (talk) 07:20, 29 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Travelling and quite busy until Friday, unfortunately... If there's something I can do to help on the weekend, I'll check back in. Cheers, Storkk (talk) 18:55, 29 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Results[edit]

I hope Rillke is well. Unfortunately, it looks like this will have to go ahead without his help. I will have some free time tomorrow, but am not sure exactly the best way of going about it. I can probably use Special:Export for each vote page and parse that XML to generate a verifiable vote count... it looks like that's manageable. Can anyone think of a better way to do this? Storkk (talk) 12:52, 7 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Storkk: As far i can see the main problem is that a user can vote for more than three files, but we have to count only the last three votes :/ (i am not familiar with xml stuff). Otherwise it would be possible to do it with a sql query. --Steinsplitter (talk) 13:01, 7 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Well, and if the editor had Javascript turned off, no protections of the POTY app will apply (only the AbuseFilter). The XML contains every (non-deleted) revision of the page as seen by the server, so in theory it should be 100% trustworthy. Once we have a list of known-valid votes, it should be easy to tally according to the rules. Perhaps it's overkill, but if it is, the automated counts are probably accurate enough for relative rankings anyway. That said, I'll try to produce a json for transparency and count the votes tomorrow. Storkk (talk) 13:13, 7 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Storkk: Thank you so much! --Steinsplitter (talk) 13:23, 7 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Special:Diff/196454615 is worrying... how could it happen? My methodology will count Fumiko Take's vote despite it not appearing in the final list (and count Salavat's too of course)... any objections? @Perhelion: you've been doing a bunch of javascript stuff recently... would it be easy to figure out how that diff was possible? My javascript-fu is sorely lacking, and unfortunately Rillke appears to be unavailable... I hope he is well. Storkk (talk) 10:26, 8 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Looking at the timestamps, it seems likely that the script fails to detect edit conflicts and just overwrites. Would this be easy/feasible to fix? Storkk (talk) 11:02, 8 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
(Edit conflict) Sigh, Looks like the script does not handle edit conflict correctly. And Rillke seems inactive, Sigh. @Storkk: Your script is conting such votes? that would be great! :-) --Steinsplitter (talk) 11:03, 8 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Edit conflicts about edit conflicts, hah! Anyway, please have a look at User:Storkk/prelim/2. I can't spend much more time on it, but it would help if the accounts with non-POTY-app edits could be checked for eligibility. I will remove ineligible votes if necessary later, which should take me 5 minutes or so, max. Storkk (talk) 15:57, 8 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Storkk: Many many thanks! I checked the votes. --Steinsplitter (talk) 16:22, 8 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Steinsplitter: Thanks! I've updated the results table. Storkk (talk) 16:39, 8 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Storkk: Sorry I'm not that firm with edit conflicts. User: Perhelion 16:26, 8 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Perhelion: OK - hopefully Rillke can find the time at some point. Storkk (talk) 16:39, 8 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
So, I think all that remains now is for a second (and third?) pair of eyes to double check the first three sections of User:Storkk/prelim/2... if we're happy with those, and if we can assume that the POTY javascript correctly prevented ineligible votes (and also assuming that nobody ineligible forged POTY app edit summaries), then I think the results table is finished. For transparency/reproducibility I have added the python code used to generate the results, so if any pythonistas would like to sanity-check it, that would be good too. Anyway, I'll be time-constrained again for another week or so.... Storkk (talk) 20:21, 8 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Storkk: , really thank you for all your work! I checked the votelists of top 4 file as far as I could with human eyes, and found no doubt about which candidates should be the top 3. I assume the Committee members, @Odisha1, Uğurkent, Rillke, Beria, and Steinsplitter: , would agree with the top 3 here:User:Storkk/prelim/2#Final results.--miya (talk) 10:22, 10 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Odisha1, Rillke, Beria, Storkk, and Steinsplitter: I extend my thanks to everyone for your contributions. Uğurkent (talk) 11:58, 12 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Committee[edit]

POTY 2015 is now over and the winner has been announced. Thanks to the Committee(@Miya: @Odisha1: @Uğurkent: @Rillke: @Beria: ) and @Storkk: (for the counting), as recognition for your work, all of you can get a commons coffee to go cup. See instructions here. --Steinsplitter (talk) 15:58, 10 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Introduction, main page[edit]

Why is Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/Introduction mostly the same as the main page? -- Rillke(q?) 15:29, 28 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"Introduction" was made with the copy of the POTY2015 main page on 2016-03-25... We should have made it a redirect to the main page, or - like last year - made the main page a redirect to Introduction. I think it is better to move the current main page to Introduction because its content is introduction, but is there no problem to move a tlanslasable page with 17 subpages?--miya (talk) 17:39, 28 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The translate extension provides a special interface for moving a translateable page with subpages. It should just work. -- Rillke(q?) 13:00, 29 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I tried - deleted "Introduction" and then checked whethere it is possible to move - but couldn't. There are many subpages which should not be moved, such as Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/R1/Gallery. And I could only move all subpages or none. I could not choose which to move and which not. So I made "Introduction" to the main page for now.--miya (talk) 17:18, 29 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Please don't announce globally, yet until there's a solution to phab:T131065[edit]

otherwise we don't do good to the databases and our users -- Rillke(q?) 16:58, 28 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I might use screen scraping for the commons contributions as Special:Contributions appears to be much faster compared to the API. -- Rillke(q?) 12:59, 29 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
So I did this, kind of at least (using {{Special:Contributions/$user|limit=$count|offset=$offset}}). Let's see how it works. -- Rillke(q?) 17:04, 29 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Rillke: , so from when to when the CentralNotice should be set to run for R1?--miya (talk) 06:41, 31 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Good news, POTY does not infringe someone's patent, at least not as a 'vote for the best competition'[edit]

Just a small snack for reading. -- Rillke(q?) 05:01, 31 March 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Unable to vote for Arthropods[edit]

When I try, the page just keeps loading and loading and loading and loading and loading. BD2412 T 01:52, 2 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Well, I tried it again and gave it some time, and it worked this time. Still an annoying wait. BD2412 T 02:10, 2 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@BD2412: Could you quantify the annoying wait for today in seconds? Which is the browser you are using? Thanks in advance. -- Rillke(q?) 17:41, 3 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It was long enough for me to get up from my computer, go do other things, and come back to find the page still trying to load. It seemed to disappear as a problem once I loaded a different page for voting. I tried it first in Chrome, and then in IE. BD2412 T 03:29, 4 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Slideshow problem?[edit]

Hi. I was looking at the pictures using the slideshow, when I noticed that some of the photographies on the gallery page do not show up on the slideshow. It was easy to check it is so counting them on two of the smaller categories:Castles and Settlements. The pages display 25 and 26 photos, while the slideshows show me only 22 and 25, respectively. I had the feeling ot also happened in the larger categories but I have not went back to checked it. - Nabla (talk) 17:13, 3 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks for reporting. I have fixed this issue with the slideshow. You may have an old version of the code cashed in your browser. To get rid of it, go to a POTY gallery page, start the slideshow and:

OK. 1,2,3,testing... - Nabla (talk) 22:36, 3 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Rillke, Castles look fine: 25/25, but Settlements still has apparently some problem. The gallery claims to have 26 photos; it actually has 27 because there are a "stack"(?) of two with File:Auguste-Hippolyte Collard, Ancien pont Saint-Michel, 1857.jpg and File:Auguste-Hippolyte Collard, Nouveau pont Saint-Michel, 1859 edit.jpg; then the slideshow displays 28: the "front" image of the stack displays once, roughly at mid-show, and then both show at the end (thus one gets repeated). - Nabla (talk) 23:00, 3 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, at least we do not forget one... this time. -- Rillke(q?) 23:02, 3 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Split[edit]

For File:George_Sand_by_Nadar,_1864.jpg I'd be tempted to suggest a {{split}} (never did that so far): good old FP, also good new version. But not while POTY is running. :-( Be..anyone (talk) 20:36, 4 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I have voted on the first six months, but now I can't get to the month access pages as I get "Lua error in Module:POTY/parser at line 14: bad argument #2 to 'format' (string expected, got nil)." in big red letters. What is this and will it get fixed??? -- SGBailey (talk)

Fixed. The problem was this edit. Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2015/Candidates should probably be locked. Rami R 07:43, 6 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Suggestion to make your contest advertisement less offensive to lesser editors[edit]

I have no idea where to place my comment, and I suppose that it will be removed from this talk page, but I want to vent my frustration. The banner "Help choose the best image of the year" appears on all wikipedia pages, leading me to naively think that I can actually help. But I actually can not vote since I have only 16 edits! I had to go through multiple pages to find and use the eligibility tool and find this out. I find your advertisement banner vexing and useless, because it promises all readers that they can contribute while this is absolutely not the case.

Proposed solution: users clicking on this banner should be *automatically* taken to the eligibility checking tool. In case this tool determines that they can not vote, this should be stored in a cookie which would modify the display of the contest in order to NOT let them believe that they can actually vote.

O You Powerful Wikimedians, please consider this suggestion Simon Chabrillat (talk) 16:50, 7 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Steinsplitter: I remember years in which we have shown the banner only if users had a specific number of contribs, namely 76. Is it still possible in CentralNotice? -- Rillke(q?) 17:32, 7 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Rillke: Are you sure that it was possible in the last years? As far i know it is not possible. --Steinsplitter (talk) 17:58, 7 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
m:CentralNotice/Usage_guidelines#Implementation mentions "local edit count", but maybe it requires JavaScript in the legacy support, and that's not enabled in m:Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/POTY_2015_R2. –Be..anyone (talk) 16:35, 10 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I am not familiar with js, maybe @Rillke: can fix the banner? --Steinsplitter (talk) 17:44, 10 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
An alternative solution would be for editors who want to participate in the voting to make enough edits to meet the threshold. BD2412 T 14:10, 22 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Not this year. –Be..anyone 💩 14:24, 22 April 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

over-protection, again[edit]

hi;

i see that this year's poty is over-protected again, so: would some admin kindly ENLARGE the previous-winner pics on the poty 2015 title-page, so that they can actually be seen & appreciated? on my screen (19" widescreen, pretty standard these days), they look tiny enough to seem comical... :p

or, since this is a thing that requires admin-level expertise just to edit, maybe someone could be clever & scale the images, so that they adjust to the viewer's screen-size? do that, & maybe i'll be impressed enough to stop bitching about having to "ask" some admin to do a simple edit on the page that i could easily handle myself, if i wasn't locked out.

i'm also posting links to the the r1 winners page in a few places outside the wikiverse; so maybe there will be some extra traffic & attention.

yet again,

btw: who the FUCK decided that wmc edit pages just needed to have little "pop-up" boxes appear & completely block everything else on the page when the page (finally) finishes loading? sweet holy hell that is ANNOYING!!!!! ...!!!!!?

tl;dr -- those pop ups are annoying as FUCK when commercial sites use them; they're even more annoying here. stop it, please?

not sorry that i don't work here anymore... -__-

Lx 121 (talk) 01:25, 21 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

...ok, so the stupid, annoying pop-up -thing only comes up the first time you try to edit something? that's better than having it all the time, but it's still not "ok".

why does anyone think that "hey let's shove an unnecessary, unwanted, useless popup right in our user's faces, JUST when they've finished loading the page that they want to see (or activate the thing that they want to use, on that page)" is actually a good idea!?

As far as I can tell, you are complaining about MediaWiki:Gadget-EnhancedPOTY.js. This has documentation at Help:Gadget-EnhancedPOTY.js, but just to summarize, it prevents an enormous amount of wasted time and effort (see Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2010/Final/File:Laser_Towards_Milky_Ways_Centre.jpg). Nothing prevents you from turning javascript off. Storkk (talk) 09:12, 24 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Just a note[edit]

I would just report 3 technical errors: vote #176 here, vote #66 here, and vote #356 here (by *feridiák) were listed wrong, (IMHO) because user name has an asterisk. I've tried to fix 'em manually, but the abuse filter prevented me. It's just a technical note, in case of problemes. Regards. --Dэя-Бøяg 23:18, 28 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@DerBorg: Thanks for reporting! Fixed that three by hand. ping @Rillke: to fix that in script. --Steinsplitter (talk) 07:25, 29 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I'm sorry! Stop. – *feridiák (talk) 11:53, 29 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Talkpage messages[edit]

Hi, Does anyone know how I can get the talkpage messages (like this one?,
I've voted in last years and this years yet I've got no messages - As I tend to remove/dismiss the boxes the messages were a big help in reminding me - I only remembered this and last years only thanks to accidentally clicking on the main page, Anyway thanks, –Davey2010Talk 18:07, 7 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Davey2010: The notice was sent out at 22 May 2016, you voted yet before 22 May 2016 thus you don't receive it. --Steinsplitter (talk) 18:14, 7 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Steinsplitter - Ahhh so they're only sent after a certain date ... riiiight so that explains why my last one was in 2014, Ah okay thanks for your help, Learn something new everyday :) –Davey2010Talk 18:23, 7 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

A few technical questions[edit]

  1. At the top of Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/Rules there is such a strange code: {{POTY2015/header/<translate><!--T:55--> en</translate>}}. What's the point of it? Why {{TNT}} isn't used instead?
  2. Why {{TNT|POTY2015/header/navi}} is at the bottom of Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/Results? Shouldn't it be at the top in order to be consistent with other POTY pages?
  3. What do you think about making Commons:Picture of the Year/2015/R2/Results/All translatable? I can do this, just let me know.

Video voting[edit]

Since i doubt people got time to see them all, they mostly vote by thumbs, i wish voting can be made after seeing it at least some part. Lets say 10-20 seconds per video. If that issue could be made voting would be more fair and appropriate. --Mile (talk) 18:27, 11 June 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]
